Three days into the World Cup, and we have our first street party. I live equidistant from the Italian and Portuguese quarters, so things get exciting come football season. This afternoon, Portugal beat Angola 1-0. College Street is at a standstill, with fans dancing and waving flags. But it's not just the Portuguese. The Angolans are partying too, mixed in with the rest. It's really not about winning or losing, and it warms my heart to see the Canadian ideal working so well.
Edit: Or maybe not. From this morning's Globe: "Celebrations turned bloody when two men in their early 20s were stabbed in a fight involving between 20 and 40 people on Dundas Street, near the corner of Grove Street. Both suffered injuries that were not life threatening. Police said the fight involved Portugal fans."
