Do wights breath?  I wouldn't have thought so.  But if not, how do they blow whistles?

Vampires and liches and such are pretty chatty.  Maybe they have discretionary breathing?

What about spectres?  Can they talk?  How?

I'm certain that there's some little paragraph in my 1st edition AD&D DM'sG that clarifies this.  Just after the rules for throwing holy water, just before the random harlot table.

Hmm ... well, my copy of the 1st Edition AD&D DM's Guide* has a section on the creation of holy/unholy water where it mentions it's use as a preventative for the onset of lycanthropy or of becoming undead ... that's actually the closest I see to the question of breath. (Other pages that mention Undead include Clerics affecting, Energy Draining By, Potion of Undead Control, Scroll of protection from, and "See also Monsters, Random Encounters."

I'd say that they can talk as a part of the enchantment or ritual that creates them. (It's part of the Undead life force, whatever) and that they can blow whistles for the same reason. Perhaps the very whistles are enchanted!

* Oh dear Gods. I made the mistake of looking at the copyright date on this book. Now I like to say that I don't feel particularly old most of the time, but I got this when it was first published ... in 1979. This book ... this book that I got as a Christmas present when I was old enough to ask for such things and understand what I was reading and take action based thereupon ... is 28 years old.

Augh!
