Previous Entry Share Next Entry

We have another old laptop, free to a good home.  If anybody local wants it, please pipe up now.  I won't ship it -- it's not worth the bother.  If nobody cares to take it, it will be given to rebootcanada.ca who will find a place for it.

Specs:
SONY Vaio PCG-FXA47
1 GHz AMD Athlon 4 processor
20 GB Hard disk
256 MB RAM
14.1" XGA screen
Internal floppy drive
Internal CD-RW/DVD drive set to region 1
PC card slots, and 2 USB ports
RS-232 port and printer port
Ethernet port
7 lbs all up

Windows XP, OEM edition pre-installed
Original recovery disks and manuals still intact.

No wireless
Battery is intact, but very old.  Its capacity is reduced to only a few minutes.  Works fine from AC adapter, of course.

Grand, it's yours.

I'm sure you can get new batteries. Batteries from official dealers are far more expensive than they're worth -- approx $200. I bought a perfectly good battery for my old Toshiba on eBay for $10 + shipping. Look around and you may find a deal.

On this particular machine you can remove the floppy drive (which you will likely never use) and put an auxiliary battery (which I do not have) in its place for even longer run time.

Will you be working tomorrow? I can drop stuff off at the store if that's convenient for you.

The existing battery has more juice than I remembered. Not the originally claimed 4 hours of run time, but at least a few tens of minutes.

If you were willing to ship, I know a 3 year old who doesn't have a computer and is going back to Guatemala in a couple weeks. Ah well.

Do you have used computer stores in your neighborhood? You should be able to buy a machine like this for $300-400.

If I were to ship to the USA by FedEx I'd pay at least $150, and I no longer have the proper packaging. It just doesn't seem like a worthwhile exercise.

Hmm... and I'm not sure why my first response showed up as anonymous.
