That must have been a heck of a lot of fun.

It was. But actually the whole experience was fun for different reasons than I anticipated. I shelled out NZ$150 knowing that I would get about 10 minutes of driving time. I figured that was an extravagance, but justified by being on vacation, on a par with skydiving or bungee jumping.

What I didn't expect was the "tour" activity first, which took 90 minutes and came for free. During that time my companion and I got to not just see all of the different vehicles, but sit in each of the crew stations. So now I can appreciate the difference in fighting compartment between a Centurion and a T-55. I have a much better idea of exactly what the loader does, and how the turret and the driver's compartment are connected. We got to poke around the engine bays of most of these vehicles too.

While we were there another client took the Centurion out for a spin. We were given a quick safety briefing then: "Just because you can see him doesn't mean he can see you. If he's coming straight for you, run. If I'm running, follow me." That was it. At no time did we have to sign any waivers. I respect the NZ legal system for that.
