This morning I fly off to Saunders Island in a little prop plane. I will spend two nights alone there with the penguins, elephant seals, and albatross. Then the plane will (hopefully!) pick me up and deposit me on Carcass Island. Despite the forbidding name, this holds a resort with a renowned chef and hot showers and other good things. After two nights on Carcass I fly back to the mainland. Do not be alarmed if I fall off the Internet for a few days during this.
I saw an absolutely terrifying airstrip yesterday on my way out to Volunteer Point. It's a grass strip, quite flat, marked out by four red-painted oil drums at the corners. Across the middle of the strip is a fence, to divide the sheep into two groups for those mysterious reasons known only to sheep farmers. "It's okay," I was assured, "we get a couple lads to stand on each side of the fence when a plane is coming in to keep it flat." Bwah!
