Three days into the World Cup, and we have our first street party. I live equidistant from the Italian and Portuguese quarters, so things get exciting come football season. This afternoon, Portugal beat Angola 1-0. College Street is at a standstill, with fans dancing and waving flags. But it's not just the Portuguese. The Angolans are partying too, mixed in with the rest. It's really not about winning or losing, and it warms my heart to see the Canadian ideal working so well.

Edit: Or maybe not. From this morning's Globe: "Celebrations turned bloody when two men in their early 20s were stabbed in a fight involving between 20 and 40 people on Dundas Street, near the corner of Grove Street. Both suffered injuries that were not life threatening. Police said the fight involved Portugal fans."

ah, but it sounds like the fight only involved people from the Portugal side.

so it's still safe and happy for the losing side's fans to celebrate with the winning side's. the winners just have to watch out for each other. :P

i hope you manage to get enough sleep over the coming month. :P :) i still have vivid memories of every Torontonian of Korean descent driving past my window honking and yelling at ridiculous hours of the night/morning in '02 when their team went on its legendary winning streak.

if things get too loud around your part of town, i'm sure you'd be welcome to camp out at our place for a night or two. :) should be pretty quiet down there - the only discernible socio-cultural group around is Yuppies, and i don't think their team qualified. *grin*

We'll see how silly things get. In a couple minutes I'm going to bike home. I wonder what the Ghana/Italy game will do to College.

I think Yuppies root for Ultimate :P.

If you can make it out to the pub tonight, I'll see you there :).
