I think I get some geek points.
The floating point libraries that came with my 8051 C compiler aren't giving me the realtime speed that I need. I just sat down and wrote a new floating-point multiply that executes in 60% of the time of the stock algorithm, at the cost of half a mantissa LSB in precision. Quite incredibly, it even seems to work!
