"Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry."
I have a fair-sized collection of novels, and I enjoy lending them to friends. However, many of them never come back. This bothers me out of any sensible proportion to the value of the item. And so, from this point forward, I'm not lending out any more books.
Instead, I shall give them. If I have lent you a book and you have not yet returned it, please consider it yours. If you see something that you like on my bookshelf, just ask and it's yours. We'll write your name on the inside of the front cover and you can dispose of it as you wish.
This offer not necessarily valid on other types of commodities. I reserve the right to continue to be a possessive control-freak when it comes to DVDs and graphic novels. One step at a time :).
